Panchachuli Base Camp Trek

Panchachuli Base Camp Trek is a spectacular trek located in the heavenly beauty of the Darma Valley of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It is one of the most beautiful treks in the Kumaon Himalayas. Panchachuli Base Camp is full of scenic beauty and is an excellent trek for beginner trekkers. Panchachuli Base Camp lies at the foothills of massif Panchachuli Peaks(Panchachuli peaks group of five peaks: Panchachuli-I(6355m), Panchachuli-II(6904m), Panchachuli-III(6312m), Panchachuli-IV(6334m), Panchachuli-V(6437m)).

Camping near the Panchachuli glacier gives a memorable experience. Panchachuli Base Camp Trek includes many small waterfalls, alpine and semi-alpine forests (coniferous, spruce, deodar, etc.), alpine meadows, ancient villages, snowy Himalayan peaks, glaciers, etc. Our primary trek route starts from Son village. Panchachuli Base Camp is only a 6 km easy hike from the Son village, which becomes a 12 km round trip.

Darma Valley - Panchachuli Glacier Trek

It is the old and traditional route to Panchachuli Base Camp and the alternative trek route of this trip. The trek to Panchachuli Base Camp starts from Dantu village or Son village, due to the road being built up to Dantu, the last settlement of Panchachuli Base Camp trek. But still, the genuine trekkers prefer to reach Panchachuli Base Camp only after crossing the entire Darma Valley on the old route. Darma Valley – Panchachuli Glacier Trek( An alternative and old trek route to the Panchachuli Base Camp Trek) starts from Dar, 5 km away from Sobla. It is about a 33 km long trek to Panchachuli Base Camp. You can also start Darma Valley Panchachuli Glacier Trek from Sobla.

Darma Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys of Kumaon Uttarakhand and is full of biological diversity and rich culture. The Darma Valley has been an important travel route of Indo-Tibetan trade and cultural exchange in ancient times. In the village of Darma Valley, you get a chance to get to know the ancient Tribale culture closely. The walking tour of Darma Valley is very picturesque. Darma valley starts from Sobla village, which is 32 km from Dharchula.

Itinerary For Panchachuli Base Camp Trek

Day 1: Kathgodam To Chaukori

Our exciting journey starts from Kathgodam Railway station and passes through a beautiful Bhimtal lake, the ‘Cultural City’ Almora, the Berinag hamlet, and ends at the panoramic Chaukori hill station. Chaukori is about 190 km from Kathgodam, which takes about 8 hours to complete. Chaukori is a beautiful hill station away from the crowd. A panoramic view of Nanda Devi Peak, Nandakot, Rajrambha, Panchachuli is visible from Chaukori. Surely! the first day of the trip will enthrall you and eliminate the fatigue of the whole day’s journey.

Day 2: Chaukori To Son Village Via Dharchula

Today we will leave for Son/Dantu Village. Son is around 170 km from Chaukori. Thal, Didihat, Askote, and Dharchula towns are on the way. After covering a distance of about 32 km from Dharchula, the Darma Valley starts from Sobla. After covering another 33km from Sobla, we reach Son Village. Tonight’s rest will be in Son or Dantu Village, which are nearby.

Night: Overnight stay in Lodge/Camps.

Day 3: Son To Panchachuli Base Camp

Wake up early in the morning and enjoy the beautiful views of nature. Also, observe the activities of the people of the village. The culture of the place and the simple nature of the people will surely fascinate you. Panchachuli peaks are visible right in front of the Dantu village. After having a healthy breakfast made of organic products, we will proceed to Panchachuli Base Camp, about a 6 km easy to moderate level trek. Throughout the trail, you will have a view of mighty Panchachuli Peaks. The trek route passes via Dantu Bugyal, in the middle of which Nyuli Yangti River flows. Nyuli Yangti originates from the Panchachuli Glacier, joins the Dhauliganga at Dantu/Dugtu.

Night stay will be in tents at Panchachuli Base Camp itself. Enjoy the countless stars in the clear sky at night. With whom the light glimpse of Panchachuli looks spectacular.

Day 4: Panchachuli Base Camp To Son

Today when the sun rises, you will want to capture the beauty of Panchachuli peaks with your camera, which looks spectacular. Trekking will be easy today. We will get down to Son for 6 km without any difficulty. Today also, we will stay at Son or Dantu village. You will have the chance to explore the nearby settlements and their surroundings. You can hike ‘Gabla Devi Mandir’ and Chyarkha Hya Top, which are 2 to 3 km climb from Dantu Top. From here, you can get a broader and more beautiful view of Panchachuli. Along with this, the valleys and villages beyond Dantu are also visible.

Day 5: Son To Askote

Now it’s time to go back from Dantu. After capturing Panchachuli peaks and villages in our memories for the last time, we will head towards Askote. Askote is at a distance of about 78 km from Son Village. It will take us 3 to 4 hours to reach Askote. After getting to the hotel, we will take some rest. Then after lunch, we will visit Askote Musk Deer Sanctuary. Here is the natural habitat of Himalayan Musk Deer. In this sanctuary, you get to see Himalayan Musk Deer besides many animals like Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, Himalayan jungle cat, civet, barking deer, serow, goral, Himalayan brown bear, and many species of high-altitude birds.

Day 6: Askote To Kathgodam

On the last day of the trip, we will go from Askote to Kathgodam. It takes about 9 hours to reach Kathgodam via Almora. From Kathgodam you can go to your destination by train. You can go from Kathgodam to Haldwani city to catch buses, which is 4 km from Kathgodam. You can also board overnight buses from Haldwani to Delhi, Dehradun, Bareilly, etc.

Absolutely can be. Badrinath, our base camp, has an altitude of more than 3100 meters above sea level. While going to an elevation of more than 3000 meters increases the chances of getting AMS. As we proceed towards Satopanth lake, the altitude reaches up to 4400 meters. Therefore high chances of occurring of AMS.
